I just came across this essay in my (VERY LARGE) "Save to Read Later" folder and it is exactly what I needed right now. That feeling of writing around and around and around, just to tell yourself you wrote every day, but not getting anywhere.... Ugh. Like a dog scrabbling around on a frozen pond. Anyway, thank you! I am going to give myself permission NOT to write anything tomorrow and just think about this project I'm stuck on!

I agree with you. I've reformulated the advice into "maintain contact with the project every day". I've noticed the subconscious is cooperating when the conscious mind maintains some kind of contact - by re-reading what you've already written, by reading notes, by doing research - with the writing at hand. Otherwise it - or the Muse? - begins to believe you deem it unimportant.
