What is this?
Welcome to Letters from Zembla. I’ll be using this space to share new writing with you — and occasionally something from the archive. I might tell you a little bit about what I’m reading, whether it’s an article I love, a book that won’t make it into a review but is worth your attention, or a curious nugget I’ve discovered in my research. Finally, I’ll pepper it all with occasional reflections on the creative life.
Who is this woman?
My name is Irina Dumitrescu, and I’m a scholar of medieval literature and a writer of essays, criticism, and memoir. I have a wide range of interests, all of which circle around several questions:
How can we learn to live with, and even embrace, imperfection?
How do can we be more creative?
What is it like to live between cultures?
What can we learn from the past?
What are we eating?
If any of these topics interest you, you are in the right place.
Where can I read more?
